Ventilation in a swimming pool

Ventilation in a swimming pool

A swimming pool is a place with increased humidity, that is why design principles and operational conditions must be special. With the wrong concept and choice of ventilation installation the result of spent efforts can be disastrous.

Why do we need ventilation in a swimming pool at all?

Comfort, reliability and durability of the whole swimming pool construction depend on how well their ventilation systems are designed.

It may seem that you can just open windows from time to time to ventilate the premises. However, you must take into consideration that in winter such ""ventilation"" will lead to illnesses of your visitors. Besides, it is not cost effective as all the heat provided by the heating system will go outside.

After all, an increased humidity level is harmful for people's health. A swimming pool is a place where you can improve your health, do some sports and have a rest if a relative humidity level is 60%. Otherwise, people and even constructions can fall victims of increased humidity.

How can we create comfort in a swimming pool?

In order to create a healthy microclimate, you must, first of all, clarify which factors influence the level of humidity in swimming pools and only then find out how to remove excessive humidity.

Specialists point out next indicators when designing ventilation in swimming pools:

The recommended temperature of water in a swimming pool is 26-29°C and in a children's swimming pool - 30-31°C. The optimal situation is when the air temperature in the premises is 2-3°C higher than the temperature of water in a swimming pool and relative humidity is 50-70%.

Having such parameters it is possible to calculate volumes of water evaporation per day and night and necessary volume of air exchange in different seasons. Then it is possible to define a necessary ventilation system to be installed.

For example, you have a 3x4 m small home swimming pool in Lviv, the temperature of water is 26°C and air temperature is 27°C, the recommended relative humidity is 60%. With such indications water evaporation will comprise 2.2 liters per hour.

To maintain humidity at 60% in such conditions you will need an intake-extract ventilation with air exchange productivity:
• in summer 707 m3/h
• in winter 155 m3/h

To decrease evaporation of a swimming pool mirror, it is necessary to cover it with a special cover at night. In any case, it will be impossible to provide a healthy microclimate without forced ventilation and air dryers. Temporary excessive humidity removal will not give a long effect. You must fight against reasons but not the consequences!

Ventilation systems for a swimming pool

Specialists state that a good-quality ventilation installation will be enough to maintain appropriate levels of humidity in small and middle-sized swimming pools. For big swimming pools with a high level of attendance, it is necessary to install both ventilation and special air dryers.

In this case a ventilation system considerably decreases the load of air dryers. You will have to buy a powerful and expensive installation if you want your air dryer to cope independently with humidity in a swimming pool, otherwise, it will be the money spent for nothing.

The benefits of installing a dryer together with a ventilation installation are evident: ventilation consumes considerably less electricity than dryers and it means that the ventilation is turned on, you can reduce modes of dryers and in such a way save the energy. Besides, if a correct ventilation is installed, air dryers can work from time to time without affecting visitors’ comfort. In the end, ventilation systems are twice cheaper than air dryers.

That is why it is much more profitable and more correct from the point of view of designing to install not only dryers but ventilation systems as well. And if it is ventilation with heat recuperation, you will considerably save energy consumption in your swimming pool.

Specialists recommend installing industrial intake-extract ventilation systems of the PRANA company as the best solution for a healthy microclimate in your swimming pool!
